It might take longer than expected to shove Gibbs, Tony, Jack, and Daniel in a box to ship to texas (as they are are heavily armed) so in lieu of that not showing up on time, I'm posting this for you!

I'm still getting over coming home on Sunday... mehness... but I did have some opportunity to really go through my photos and select out a few, (yup, actually just a few--I have an itchy trigger finger when it comes to a camera...) to share. We left off my narrative on Thursday night from the previous post, How I spent my birthday, or Damn Woolsey and the City Cloak, where I went to Fisherman's Wharf and San Jose. Well, friday, I had the opportunity to sleep in. Did I? of course not!! I was up at the crack of dawn. The friend I was staying with though was only working a half day, so I laid low rather than start something I might have to backtrack for later. So I relaxed, wrote up a post, and most of all, went grocery shopping. It was strange to see the exact same supermarket chain I go to set up so differently, let alone the different types of produce we just don't have out here on the east coast. It was interesting to have to guess what my housemate might like, as I didn't get a shopping list from her to begin with--I only knew what she already had in her place.
Anyways, by the time it was all set and done, we didn't even get out of the house till about three thirty. So, we nixed plans to shop around and went straight to the beach. I only had three goals in San Francsico:
1. Drive the Golden Gate Bridge Completed Thursday!!
2. See the sunset over the Pacific Ocean Check.
3. See ancient giant Sequoias (or Redwoods).

So we took a nice long windy road through the hilly peninsula to Half Moon Bay. We spent just shy of two hours out on the beach while it got progressively colder (and I of course forgot to bring a sweater or anything!) watching the sunset.

Onto the Beach we go!! )

(oh, hey, the story isn't done yet!! I forgot!! So, it got dark, we nearly killed ourselves on windy hilly roads (though not nearly to the extent we did on Saturday) and made our way to Hwy 101, which is according to Phantom Planet and its song "California" (Think the O.C. Main theme people) its one of the biggest highways on the coastline (and we sooo totally listened to that song on single repeat the entire time) and made our way to downtown San Francisco. We did Chinatown by night and dined at the oldest Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, the Four Seas. Then we stopped in one of the cheesiest discount Chinese store in the area and had a blast looking around. It was very difficult for me not to walk home with Han Solo, Greedo, and Princess Leia bobbleheads (not to mention they did have Boba Fett!!) If they had Luke, Obi Wan, or Wedge Antilles, I wouldn't have been able to resist. I ended up with a cute over the shoulder teal purse thingie (half messenger bag, half purse) and a whole bunch of coin purses that fit respectively my iPhone, my camera, credit cards and a thick wad of cash (which thankfully, for all those of you who might think of coming and mugging me, is safely back in the bank, even if it was only singles...) We came back to the apartment and crashed within minutes, getting ready for our trip to Yosemite on Saturday (those pictures will be in another post in a couple of days!)

It was a bit strange, walking around in a city I've never been to completely by myself to celebrate my birthday.  On one hand, the city is gorgeous, it was high 60s and even hit the 70s (which compared to DC, heck, screw the comparision--its my dream temperature anywhere!!) and the city wasn't crowded!!  I'm here visiting a friend from college, but she couldn't get time off during the week, so rather than cooping myself up in her appartment, I journeyed out into the city as a really independent gal.

I should note that I planned this trip before the new year.  I only mention this because after I saw the series finale of Stargate: Atlantis, I got superexcited to come to San Francisco.  I geekified my entire trip by imagining half the SGC in San Francisco, and even pulled out my madcool Atlantis soundtrack while taking a boat tour of the bay...  Knowing I would be visiting SF helped me complete and write out the fic i popped out as a tag to the finale and how Daniel would react to the news...  it got me excited and squeeing as I repeatedly reminded people in my office I would be out of town.

So, onto the pictures (lj cut for your flist protection!!)

see, i told you it was cut!! )

So, what was supposed to be a six hour trip to San Francisco became over ten hours when our plane was delayed approximately four hours while sitting in line to de-ice the plane.  Apparently the plane in front of us just wouldn't de-ice for anything.  The runways were clear, but they were severely short of de-icing crews for United.  It was not pretty...  I should have arrived in San Francisco approximately 11ish in the morning, but it was 4pm before I left the airport with my rental car and on the way.  But, between naps when I could grab them, I did take a few pics out the window of the plane to some really pretty mountains--I assume they are respectively the Rockies and the Sierra Nevadas, although I really avoided knowing what time everything was on the plane, and couldn't tell you which ones they were!  The bottom is a picture of the de-icer as she sprayed steaming hot pinkish goo to de-ice the plane...

The pictures!! )

Technically its not until tomorrow, but I may have only intermittent connection between now and Monday...

(because I simply could not do something in b/w or monotone... its something I've got to work on!!)

And a superspecial extra gift right behind the box...

So, it has come to my attention that I ask A LOT of canon questions, usually via instant messenger to at least one of my canon SG-1 goddesses for a nitpicky question here or there, such as my current one: When is the first time we see Sha're's picture?? (As in, I really want to know if we see it prior to the season 2 episode "Secrets") If you happen to know the answer to this, please let me know!!

But then I also inquired if there were such a LJ comm that would be specifically for canon questions (for those of us that try desperately to stay in canon when possible when writing??) The Wikis are great, but when you don't know where exactly to look (like in cases where finding the answer to the question above either means watching all of Season 1 again until found (which may not be a waste of time, but may indeed delay the reason the question was asked in the first place) or going through the transcripts on the Wikis) it sometimes can be answered by a resident canon SG-1 goddess. So the question then is, is it worth having an SG-1 Canon community in which to ask these questions, do I just keep annoying people on my IM who might know the answer, or am I the only person asking these questions to begin with?

Happy New Year folks! (we've got about 20 seconds or so here in DC, and by the time I post, it will probably already be 2009!)

So, I've been watching Meridian WAY too many times (I'm amazed i'm not as depressed as I could be watching it) but I am still struggling to grasp the understanding of some of the Omaisms...  So what better way than a poll!!  [Poll #1315725] Now, before we get onto the rest of the poll... I had an idea about the second phrase I wanted to expound upon for a moment. Maybe I'm channelling Sam Carter's scientific view about this, but heh. [Poll #1315726] What are your thoughts about Omaisms? What were your favorite ones? Did you tremble in fear everytime a glowy white thing threatened to speak nonsense? And what was on the menu that the candlelight cooked?[Poll #1315726][Poll #1315725]

So, I promised a thank you card to [livejournal.com profile] beanpot if the stuff I ordered from Lands End *gasp* actually fits...

I am in love with the two new fleeces that I bought... I'm absolutely in love with them, and they are a perfect fit!!  (now I just have to wait till february for the yellow goodness fleece to arrive, but the pink and mint green will do nicely until then (as I try not to wear them all the time now...)
samantilles_at_lj: (Lefties are Exceptional)
Would I have opened the CNN.com website this afternoon if a few of my flist weren't commenting on Illinois politics and I had no idea what was going on (my cnn.com email arrived three hours before Blagojevich was arrested)?  Probably not.  Time spent laughing hysterically with coworkers as I point them to CNN.com?  way too much.

Would I have gone and bought a whole bunch of brightly colored fleeces and even a hugely marked down kelly green down vest if it wasn't for someone on my flist?  Nope.  In fact, I didn't even know that Lands End even had plus sizes until I clicked on her little link.  Then I couldn't resist myself to the lemon yellow, the carnation pink and even the cool mint green!  *squees in colorful delight*

Speaking of CNN, as I was reading, it came to my attention that since the affirmation of Madeleine Albright to the US Secretary of State post in 1997 (beginning the second Clinton term) the post has been overwhelmingly female?  How awesome is that?  Colin Powell has been the only male to hold the post since Albright.  While I was very disheartened to see Powell leave office (I've followed him since he was elected and hold the highest respect for him as a diplomat), I am glad to see that people notice that diplomacy is a skill that is equally found in women as in men.  Even if Obama does not win a second term, 12 of the 16 years will have women placed at the highest level of diplomatic power.  If Obama wins another term in 2012, then (most likely) 16 of the 20 years will be women, a clear majority for two decades.

a plea...

I'm sending out a call for a beta! I am in desperate need for someone who is okay with a Meridian based story who can come in and help me through it.  I will warn any volunteers in advance it is Daniel's POV and can get a bit harsh/painful early on.  I know Meridian is an iffy area for a lot of Daniel fans, so I don't want to specifically make a request to a particular person, hence the call.  On the plus side, it gets lighter before the end, so its not all death and pain (at least the way it's developing!)

all were taken with my iPhone, which means the resolution isn't great, but its wonderful for the on the spot picture taking opportunity!

So, now that AMUN is done, I've got loads of things I wanted to do, and now I actually have a little bit of time I can dedicate to that list. On the wishlist of things to get done were some new icons. While I'm certainly not done, I have put together a bunch in the past week or so (mostly these past few days since AMUN), but there are two in particular I am extremely happy with:

And while I'm on the subject of new icons, here are a few I created that I might not have posted:

And because I may have more than two or so non-Stargate ones, they are behind a cut! )

Back on November 11th, I released two iPhone compatible ringtones for the Stargate SG-1 and movie. I have personally enjoyed them so much I decided to create a few more with the new Stargate soundtracks I purchased recently, as noted here. I've taken the smallest of opportunities (such as driving in the car, plane rides, the five minutes of freedom I was given in scarce quantities over the past ten days, etc) to begin a comprehensive review of the Stargate Soundtrack series, and I've noted a few sequences I thought might be appropriate (or ones I just really really liked) for Ringtones.

Before we get to the ringtones, my disclaimer:
The works are still copyrighted to the respective creators, David Arnold and Joel Goldsmith, as well as the owners of the Stargate Franchises. These ringtones are created using DMC free music (therefore not violating copyright laws reposting them) and created by me using GarageBand. These are not for sale, therefore I am not making any profit off of these. These are for personal enjoyment only. They are designed for the iPhone, however I do not know if they are usable by other phones. If anyone wants to try it and get back to me, I would greatly appreciate it.

From the previous posting:

Stargate: the Movie~Main Theme

Downloading instructions: Right click to save the linked zip files. Open the zipped file and move the ringtone right into iTunes by either dragging it or add it to your collection as you normally do with electronic files. Both Windows and Macs do have a drag-ability function, so saving to a desktop and moving right into the program should work. The files will automatically move into the Ringtones category in iTunes at the very top under "Library". From there, once you connect your iPhone to iTunes, simply drag the ringtone into your phone, reset your phone settings for the new ringtone, and you are on your way.

Happy Thanksgiving Folks!

10 days...

samantilles_at_lj: (gummy sam animated)
Its all over--my month of madness has finally come to a close. Thank goodness!!! The past ten days especially have been quite hectic, and lets just say the thirteen hours or so of sleep I got didn't nearly cover all that I've missed recently. I arrived back from my trip to Chicago last night, and a special thank you to [livejournal.com profile] aurora_novarum who recommended ginger ale to cut back on the air sickness. Actually, I guess the person next to me should be the one thanking her, as I didn't puke on him--a situation to which he was very thankful (I warned him as he sat down next to me that anything could really happen.) She was delightful company while I was on the small cramped plane waiting to take off, and just as she was telling me about ginger ale helping I was ordering it repeatedly throughout the flight.

As to the actual trip, the conference went really well overall. For those of you not familiar with Model United Nations, it is an academic activity where people (in this case college/graduate/law students) come together to learn about diplomacy and international issues by simulating the United Nations, each student or team of students representing a nation through a series of committees, including the General Assembly committees 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and concurrent plenary, as well as the ECOSOC plenary, the United Nations Environmental Programme, the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and the Economic Commission on Latin America and the Caribbean. We also hold two crisis simulations for the Current Security Council and the Historical Security Council, year 1967. We boasted the highest numbers ever in our 19 years, with a grand total of over 1500 participants, with 1350 participants in simulation (the extra 150 include faculty representatives, sponsors, guests of our graduate school expo, etc.) and a grand total of 138 nations represented throughout our committees. I ended out my one year term as Director-General of Home Government, a department that is in charge of content-related customer service. We provide research for participants to enhance their simulations and their experience as well as act as roleplayers for non-governmental organizations, inter-governmental organizations not already represented (such as the Security Council needing someone from the IAEA, etc) and nations not represented by another delegation. While being Director-General this year has been quite an experience, especially at conference, I am more than ready to hand over the reins of power to my successor and enjoy the next few years just being that strange HG staffer who knows how to find everything. I loved every minute I got to spend with my closest friends on staff, the unending reception and giving of hugs (of which I am particularly fond), the kind words and the thoughtfulness that comes with working with each other and truly becoming a family by the week's end. I also continued my tradition of going to see a movie during the only afternoon we have off, Monday. My movie partner of four years, Teresa, Good Uncle Harlan (an original founder staffer of the AMUN conference) and I enjoyed nonstop action and Daniel Craig goodness in the new Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. It was particularly fitting we see this as two years ago Teresa and I premiered Casino Royale the same afternoon at the same movie theatre. Of the things I will not miss: the two hours a night of sleep I was able to get, the incredibly dry air in the hotel which usually makes me sick and voiceless (I bought my own humidifier to counter this--the smartest move I made all year), the unending rounds of pizza and donuts, and the constant worry about losing something (which I did... I lost my precious Harry Potter scarf I've had for years, the one from the first movie with the large yellow and garnet stripes. I was able to find a replacement copy to purchase today at Alivan's where I bought the original thankfully. The scarf design changed in the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, so I was really worried I couldn't get a replacement from the first two movies. I love this scarf!! The sad part is that I lost it within a matter of five minutes when I went upstairs with someone and realized I left it in the lobby. It was gone when I got back down.

What is ahead for me: I need to get back into my writing... ten days away from the plotlines running in my head has been very distressing. I do not want another repeat of writers block because I focused on international relations and the Law of the Sea.
My mother and sister return from their Las Vegas trip tonight, which is why we are not having Thanksgiving today. Instead it will be tomorrow, and we even managed to change our godparent's schedule to accomodate for that. We will also go see the new Bond movie tomorrow night (which by the way, was totally awesome!!) and Kevin will come over, spend the night with me at my sister's place (as my bedroom goes to my godparents) and spend Saturday lounging around making up for two weeks worth of missed TV. The only downside: I will most likely miss tomorrow night's [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate chat on Season 4 Premiere Small Victories which is sad, because it is the highlight of my week when we have one. It'll also be the first I've missed since joining the redial group, which by the way ya'alls, I totally love you all!! Its been wonderful meeting and getting to know everyone and enjoying a lot of Stargate goodness!

Anyways, I must go scrounge something, as I am one of very few that aren't already stuffed with turkey and have to fend for myself this Thanksgiving night.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, even if you don't celebrate it!

I wasn't going to post this, but ah well... and this time, its more grammatically correct...

If you saw ME in a police car, for which crimes do you think I was arrested? Answer me, then post to your own journal and see the crimes of which you are accused.

[livejournal.com profile] stargazercmc began a discussion on ringtones when she purchased her first iPhone, including wanting a Stargate one. Well, that sent me off to go make one! But one just isn't good enough, so I made two... the first is the actual beginning theme to Stargate: SG-1, and the second is from the main theme to the original 1994 Stargate Movie.

Disclaimers: The works are still copyrighted to the respective creators, David Arnold and Joel Goldsmith, as well as the owners of the Stargate Franchises.

Without further adeu:
Stargate: SG-1 Theme Ringtone

Stargate: the Movie Theme Ringtone

Downloading instructions: Right click to save the linked zip files.  Open the zipped file and move the ringtone right into iTunes by either dragging it or add it to your collection as you normally do with electronic files.  Both Windows and Macs do have a drag-ability function, so saving to a desktop and moving right into the program should work.  The files will automatically move into the Ringtones category in iTunes at the very top under "Library".  From there, once you connect your iPhone to iTunes, simply drag the ringtone into your phone, reset your phone settings for the new ringtone, and you are on your way.

*More ringtones may appear as I listen closely to the Stargate soundtracks, so watch out for them!*
