samantilles_at_lj: (SG-1 Daniel No Idea)
samantilles_at_lj ([personal profile] samantilles_at_lj) wrote2009-01-05 01:22 pm

I think it might be a good idea, but what about ya'lls??

So, it has come to my attention that I ask A LOT of canon questions, usually via instant messenger to at least one of my canon SG-1 goddesses for a nitpicky question here or there, such as my current one: When is the first time we see Sha're's picture?? (As in, I really want to know if we see it prior to the season 2 episode "Secrets") If you happen to know the answer to this, please let me know!!

But then I also inquired if there were such a LJ comm that would be specifically for canon questions (for those of us that try desperately to stay in canon when possible when writing??) The Wikis are great, but when you don't know where exactly to look (like in cases where finding the answer to the question above either means watching all of Season 1 again until found (which may not be a waste of time, but may indeed delay the reason the question was asked in the first place) or going through the transcripts on the Wikis) it sometimes can be answered by a resident canon SG-1 goddess. So the question then is, is it worth having an SG-1 Canon community in which to ask these questions, do I just keep annoying people on my IM who might know the answer, or am I the only person asking these questions to begin with?

I constantly have those kind of questions, too!

then again, once I get into something like this, I really enjoy working into canon pieces (like a puzzle!) and seamlessly adding in tags and such.

It sounds like a good idea! I hereby volunteer myself as a "canon queen", and I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] sg_fignewton would be more than happy to render her Canon vs. Fanon services.

I <3 her Canon vs. Fanon series--I go back to them constantly!! They would definitely have to be linked on the links list to the side or something, they are a really great resource.

Hee! I like the series too, though more from an amusement standpoint than a reference. Just because something's fanon doesn't mean it isn't still good to use! Besides, I can think of one fanon element that wound up canon: Daniel's triple PhDs.

if and when I do break from canon, its then for a guilty pleasure (I do love some of fanon--just a wee bit) but i started reading a lot of fanfiction before even finishing the series and got myself very confused for a while what happened in the fic and what happened in the series...

Good question. There are, I'm told, some fic research comms out there now. I don't know if any of them are fandom specific or not, though.

(And I think that is the first time we saw her picture... unless we saw it first in Fire and Water.)

at least that cuts down the number of eps to watch through just for a glance at the picture!! Fortunately I worked myself up into the canon question so that I've worked around it either way; it didn't stump me into a writer's block (just yet)

[identity profile] sg-betty.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a great idea! It would stop my steady stream of emails to Fig at unlikely hours. ; )

[identity profile] samantilles.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
well, i don't know about stopping--if you are as needy as I am for instant gratification, i'd be sending out the IMs and posting (and praying for a quick response)

[identity profile] sg-betty.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, kind of needy... I don't seem to think of the question until I'm in the middle of a paragraph that is demanding to be written. ; )

[identity profile] samantilles.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely sympathize... usually its the "OMG--does this fit in canon!??! What if??!?!" factor for me... and I am horribly addicted to instant gratification.

[identity profile] sg-betty.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I guessed that from your AIM fixation. (Still haven't sussed that out-I'm afraid to, frankly. The last thing I need is another addictive computer thing. ; )

its less a fixation than preferred method of communication *tries to assume innocent look* I'm always online, but I don't chat on it all day long (outside of one or two people throughout the day--usually at my lunch break) its the only way I can talk with my sister (as she doesn't pick up her phone like ever!) and again, it goes back to instantaneous gratification (we can see when people are typing!!! which means I also know when I'm being ignored or more innocently people aren't there and left their AIM's on.)

people aren't there and left their AIM's on

*whistles innocently*

my sister is notorious for this (worse than anyone else I can think of!!) She left her AIM on when she went away for a two week vacation!! Someone in her office shut it down about six days into the vacation (thank goodness)

*gasp* I actually missed some of the wacky rants and ravings I got from her on an hourly basis while she was gone!!

Someone mentioned to me there may have been a comm like this, but I don't know that it's active. I can't remember if/when I've seen it, but there's a lot of lj fandom I'm still just discovering with Stargate verse.

I'll say what I mentioned in AIM, I still think complicated metaphysical questions aside, if you ask on your lj and it links via the debrief, a lot of people may answer you that way, but there's nothing wrong with making a comm either as a one stop shop for people to find out these things.

I'd probably hang out from time to time (just what I need, another outlet for my compulsive Stargate trivia twitch. It's a blessing...and a curse).
